Leadership
Sports teaches valuable life lessons to our youth that are essential for maturing into contributing members of our communities. Athletics can help to build those key elements of values, character, and leadership through structured leagues and programs. Inter Tribal Sports continued to offer additional enrichment opportunities to further build these skills through various programs such as our abroad program, scholarship program, and various volunteering opportunities. These programs empower Native youth by instilling and enhancing the values learned through youth sports that will ensure they will be successful in their current and future endeavors.
Scholarships
Inter Tribal Sports launched its inaugural scholarship program in 2013, as a part of ITS commitment to encouraging the pursuit of higher education. Native American youth from the ITS service area in southern California, that were graduating high school seniors or current college students attending a university, junior college, or trade school were eligible to apply. Pictured below are the outstanding previous recipients.
Sports Abroad Program
In 2023, Inter Tribal Sports began the ITS Sports Abroad Program. This program seeks to broaden opportunities for our youth as well as provide access to life changing travels. This program allows participating youth to visit new places while fully emerging themselves within a different culture. During our first trip, ITS took 30 youth from various different tribes to Italy. This fulfilling experience provided the youth with an experience they will never forget.
In Summer of 2025, ITS is going abroad again, this time to New Zealand. In New Zealand we will collaborate with the local indigenous group: The Māori. We plan on participating in a basketball tournament, site seeing and cultural engagement. See below for more information.
